An Italian journalist, Francesco Cancellato, recently received a warning from WhatsApp, alerting him that his phone may have been targeted by spyware. The attack is linked to Paragon Solutions, an Israeli company known for selling surveillance tools to governments. Reports suggest that around 90 people, including journalists and activists, were targeted globally. Cancellato, who leads the investigative news site Fanpage.it, had previously exposed far-right political activities in Italy, raising concerns about the motive behind the attack. While it remains unclear who ordered the surveillance, reports indicate that the Italian government may be among Paragon’s clients. The spyware, designed to breach encrypted messaging apps like WhatsApp and Signal, has sparked fears over press freedom and privacy. Despite growing concerns, both Paragon and WhatsApp have not publicly addressed the specific allegations, leaving many questions unanswered.
